At UCSB, I was interested in protein structure and how it affects functionality. I worked with Megan Grabenauer looking at aggregation rates of α-synuclein. Various studies implicate pesticides as compounds that accelerate the aggregation of this protein, which is associated with Parkinson's disease. We attempted to characterize α-synuclein/pesticide complexes using ion mobility methods and explored other methods for monitoring changes in the proteins’s structure since the pesticide complexes proved difficult to isolate.
